Lesson Focus:  Students will be learning about what obesity is, causes, and health conditions related to it.  We will look at how sugar plays a part in obesity in our society.

Students watched a video clip on their ipads about obesity in the U.S.  They were asked to write down two observations.

Students watched a power pt. presentation on obesity and sugar.  They interacted by writing down answers on the dry erase boards provided.

Sugar activity using foods to show how much sugar is in each serving.  They used a bag of sugar, tsp. and a cup to try to guess the amount in the serving sizes.  Winners were given a robin egg (sugar cube)

Assignment:  Choose three snack foods and find three other snack foods that would be a healthy alternative.  Record amount of &, g, etc. for the food label nutrients.  Used Calorieking.

Filming them

Last week Terry came up with the great idea of having students film each other during Badminton. He suggested that students have to showcase a underhand serve, a lob and then a smash and then put that in their SLC folder for conferences. I thought what a great idea for them to show what they are learning. But then....

This got me to thinking...not only can we do that but then students can also watch themselves and see the areas that they need to improve on. I have the APP coaches eye and while I have not yet figured out how to use it for Badminton this is something that would help the students improve on a particular skill. They would be thinking how they can get better and using technology to do so. In conclusion I think using technology to film students in action and then having them watch and analyze is great!

Many ways to figure heart rate zones.  Have used many and I would shy away from a few of them.  One of the most accurate ones I found was 180 minus your age.  Seemed to put me in a nice aerobic zone most of the time.  Would just have to check out others.

Heart Rate Monitors

Jan 9th follow up....We discussed at what grade level these would be most effective. We believe that 4th-6th grade are still motivated intrinsically and extrinsically. That being said, we think 7th-12th grade would benefit the most from the heart rate monitors. We are discussing cost of the monitors and how we can implement these in our PE curriculum so that they are cost effective.

The PE department would like to get and use heart rate monitors. That way students are more in charge of their fitness. We would give them different amounts of times where they have to be in the healthy heart rate fitness zone. Students would be able to assess their own bodies and heart rates and see where they are. Are they succeeding? Or do they need to be moving more?  We think heart rate monitor would be a great assessment tool for us and for the students. They would be in charge of their own movement. Making sure they do what they can to stay in that zone.
